NFL, Regular Season
In his first NFL preseason action with the Jacksonville Jaguars, No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence threw for 71 yards in two series in the first half against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday. Lawrence, the Clemson All-American picked first by the Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft, was sacked and nearly fumbled on his first snap, but recovered to go 6-of-9. Lawrence was sacked twice in 11 dropbacks and the Jaguars punted and turned the ball over on downs on his two series. Gardner Minshew II took over for Lawrence on the second series of the second quarter.
Jay Cutler retired from the NFL to embrace a new position: man of the people. As talking heads critique Cutler for "anti-science" remarks, his work alongside pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly has helped support children struggling with diabetes — a demographic heavily impacted by COVID-19 — since 2009. Cutler has also participated in Dedicated to Diabetes, and is the founder of the Jay Cutler Foundation, which has aided at-risk youth struggling in and out of high schools. Thankfully, Cutler doesn’t give an eff about Uber’s opinions — also adding "Future School board member" to his Twitter bio. Cutler’s opinions on masking children were called out by Keith Olbermann, meaning the former QB must have said something right.

TAMPA — The return to the road and return to actual football games was a gratifying experience. With the Bengals ’ 19-14 victory against the Super Bowl champions, Cincinnati took one of three steps toward being ready for the opener against Minnesota. If you were picked in 2020 or 2021 and have limited NFL experience, this was the night for you. The rookies offered a number of reasons to be excited. Here are the things I saw in Tampa that stood out in the big picture of the season.1.
Urban Meyer, who notoriously took losses hard as a college coach, knew he would have to be mentally prepared to lose more as an NFL coach. That didn’t make watching his offense roll up all of 85 yards in the first half of Saturday’s 23-13 preseason loss to the Browns any easier to watch. What particularly vexed Meyer was the tempo at which the offense ran when Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew — listed by the Jaguars as co-No. 1, but we all know Lawrence is the actual starter — were in the game.
